Ichirindo is an artisan workshop that finds joy in the art of craftsmanship. Acting as a bridge connecting the beauty of the past to the future, we carry forward traditional techniques while pursuing new forms of art cherished by people living in the present.

Each piece of Tsumami-zaiku crafted by the skilled hands of our artisans is a one-of-a-kind creation imbued with its own unique spirit. However, due to the fragile nature of the fabric used as its primary material, preservation is a challenge. Many historically significant works have been lost to past disasters and wars. Furthermore, the number of artisans producing fabrics and decorative materials continues to decline, threatening the continuity of this craft for future generations.

 

With these harsh realities in mind, Ichirindo embraces a sense of duty to take on this challenge. We strive to incorporate fresh perspectives into Japanese culture while aiming for an unconventional and timeless aesthetic.

 

We hope that tsumami-zaiku will become a familiar part of everyone's daily life, adding vivid color.

 

 

What is Tsumami-zaiku?

 

Tsumami-zaiku is a traditional Japanese craft dating from the Edo period, in which fine squares of cloth are pinched together to form petals and ornaments. It is mainly made from silk and crepe, and the work is carried out by hand by skilled craftsmen to produce gorgeous pieces. These have long been used as hairpins and hair ornaments.

At Ichirindo, we create works that break traditional boundaries by combining traditional techniques with new materials and modern technologies. Our creations feature a rich variety of flower motifs and color variations, changing with the seasons. Customized pieces, especially for special events such as weddings and coming-of-age ceremonies, are particularly popular. The creation process demands the utmost attention to detail and delicacy, with the final products reflecting the passion and skill of the artisan.

In addition to our activities as a workshop, Ichirindo is also dedicated to promoting the art of tsumami-zaiku. Through workshops and courses, beginners can easily learn the techniques of tsumami-zaiku. Through these efforts, we strive to pass on the tradition of tsumami-zaiku to the next generation.

 

 

Ichirindo's Tsumami-zaiku

 

Edo tsumami kanzashi, designated as a traditional craft of Tokyo, has a history of 200 years and is still beloved today as a hair accessory for MAIKO, as well as for Shichi-Go-San and coming-of-age ceremonies. Tsumami-zaiku, which involves folding square fabric with tweezers to express motifs of flowers, birds, wind, and moon, has been a part of many women's lives at significant milestones due to its delicacy and charm.

Today, with the diversification of lifestyles, tsumami-zaiku is not only used with traditional kimono but also combined with Western attire, used as accessories, and decorations. At Ichirindo, we create beautiful tsumami-zaiku that match the times while preserving traditional materials and techniques. Additionally, we offer services such as remaking to ensure that commemorative tsumami-zaiku can be cherished for years to come.

Whether for the First Baby Celebration, Shichi-Go-San, Jusan-mairi, coming-of-age ceremony, or wedding, we aim to create tsumami-zaiku that can be passed down as family heirlooms, conveying memories through a single flower to commemorate life’s important milestones.
