The water at the temizuya is used to cleanse both hands and spirit before approaching the sacred area.This ritual is called temizu, or “purification with water.”
1.Hold the ladle with your right hand and scoop water.
2.Pour water over your left hand to cleanse it.
3.Switch the ladle to your left hand and cleanse your right hand.
4.Transfer the ladle back to your right hand, pour water into your left palm, and use it to rinse your mouth. (Note: Rinsing the mouth is currently not recommended for hygiene reasons.)
5.Tilt the ladle upright to let the remaining water run down the handle, cleansing it, then place the ladle face down in its original position.
【The Meaning of Temizu】
Temizu is a ritual performed before approaching a deity, in which one purifies the hands and mouth with flowing water.
It is a simplified form of misogi, an ancient purification rite that removes spiritual and physical impurities through the cleansing power of natural waters such as rivers and the sea.
Step up to the offering box and place your coin with sincerity.
There is no set amount, but a five-yen coin is considered auspicious, as it symbolizes good fortune and connection (go-en).
3.How to Worship at a Shrine
After making an offering, follow the traditional "two bows, two claps, one bow" ritual (ni-rei, ni-hakushu, ichi-rei).
1.Stand straight and bow deeply twice.
2.Open your hands to about shoulder width and clap twice.
3.Place your hands together and pray silently, expressing gratitude and your wishes.
4.Bow deeply once more at the end.
